HOUSE CONCERTS.

Years ago, we went to Austin, Texas, home to SXSW and a concert format we’d never experienced.

A friend who knew a local musician would ask them over to play in their living room, then invite the neighbours, who each put $20 into the jar, and everyone enjoyed an evening of music, along with some basic food and drink provided by the host. That was it.

The musicians sold a few CDs, the audience got an intimate performance, and occasionally, a career got a nudge. In a world where great artists struggle to be seen online, this kind of high-touch, in-person gathering can make all the difference.

…BUT I KNOW WHAT I LIKE.

I don’t know much about art. I especially don’t ‘get’ abstract art. This has caused me to avoid it and to shy away from the people who love and consume it. Where modern art-lovers gather, you won’t find me.

I know I should try harder. Many friends have tried to help open my eyes. Some say art is not about getting an emotional reaction, the way you do with music or books. It’s about making you think of what the artist is saying about the world.

I think a lot of us are fluent in one art form and ignorant or fearful of other forms.

A MASTERCLASS GETS SOME MISTRESSES.

Until a few years ago, the chances of seeing a woman on the podium conducting an orchestra were approximately zero.

Today, they’re popping up everywhere. Keri-Lynn Wilson, a Canadian-American, guest-conducts all over the world, Barbara Hannigan, also a Canadian, guest-conducts and singsthe world over too. And the American, Marin Alsop, is the leading woman conductor on any podium.

But a Canadian woman conducting a Canadian orchestra on more than a drive-by basis?Fuhgeddaboudit.

But that too is changing.
