Robert Macfarlane is one of the world’s most original thinkers – especially about how we co-exist with nature.
His last book, Underland, was rapturously received, translated into a dozen languages, and won (among many prizes) the Writers’ Trust’s first-ever Weston International Award.
His new book is even more daring: Is a River Alive? is driven by a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings, who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law.
Robert Macfarlane will speak on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in Ondaatje Hall at Massey College on the U of T campus. Macfarlane will introduce his book to us and then be interviewed by Massey College Principal Dr. James Orbinski.
